Why it works In a 2006 study by the Institute of Movement Sciences in Rome, Italy, researchers asked two groups of volunteers to sweat it out on a treadmill for 15 minutes at an intensity comparable to a heart-pumping Power Yoga class. One group listened to upbeat music; the other slogged through the routine in silence. The scientists measured lactic acid, norepinephrine (a stress hormone that shows up in the blood), blood pressure, and heart rate and found that all were significantly lower in the group that worked out with a soundtrack.

Their conclusion: Music can chill you out, which makes you better able to concentrate on your form and on transitioning from one move to the next without being distracted by fatigue. To focus on mastering your poses and to practice steady, deep breathing, listen to a workout music mix that has regular hasconstant rhythms and drumbeats, says Jonathan Fields, cofounder and director of Sonic Yoga in New York City.
