Outdoor Fitness is high-quality exercise equipment similar to what is found in a gym, but the equipment is located outdoors and is free for the public to use during daylight hours. The fitness equipment can be used by anyone age 14 and up, regardless of ability level and some units are even designed for individuals in wheelchairs. Outdoor Fitness is designed to make exercise fun and social, encouraging users to exercise more often and for longer periods of time leading to improved physical fitness and better health.
A public meeting to talk about a new outdoor gym coming to the community was held on February 18, 2016 at the Gum Springs Community Center gym in Alexandria, VA.
Q. What is an outdoor fitness gym?
An outdoor fitness gym is a relatively new facility type that has emerged in the United States within the last five years. The predecessor to outdoor gyms was the "parcourse" or fitness trail, popular in the 1970s and 1980s. Several of these can still be found in Fairfax County, including at Burke Lake, Royal Lake, Langley Fork, Nottoway, and Lincolnia Parks. Modern outdoor fitness facilities include updated and durable equipment that provides for a broader range of high quality exercise opportunities than the old fitness trail equipment.
Q. Why is Fairfax County investing in outdoor fitness?
A Healthy Fairfax is important! Outdoor fitness is an emerging trend nationwide that may provide an opportunity to address health equity issues and to improve parks and communities. In early 2015, the Fairfax County Park Authority launched a study of outdoor fitness as a possible new facility to meet the health and recreation needs of county residents.
